History
In the Beginning
Fripp Island’s history can be traced back to the 17th Century when the island was deeded to Captain Johannes Fripp, a swashbuckling privateer who, used this majestic 3000-acre island as a retreat and hiding place for his treasures. The island was a hunting and fishing destination in the 1900s by local families. The trip to Fripp Island from Beaufort was by boat.Tents were erected with rugs and cots for weeks of enjoyment. The development of the island resort was started in the 1960's when a bridge half mile access bridge was built from Hunting Island.
In Books and Movies
The author Pat Conroy lived on Fripp Island for years and wrote many of his novels based on his Marine family. Many scenes in his movies were filmed on Fripp and the surrounding Low Country. We named our vacation home we built in 2006 "The Great Sandtini" with a nod to this legacy. I grew up in a Marine Corps family with five siblings and like the Conroy family we moved in an old gray station wagon to a new base like Beaufort every two years. "Forrest Gump" was filmed outside what is today our back porch years ago when the Ocean Creek Golf course was still a jungle
On the Island Resort
The two designer golf courses are perfect for any golfer to get out and enjoy the area's beautiful scenery. The Great Sandtini’s back porch faces the first hole on the Ocean Creek course. Our kids and grand kids love to putt in the evenings after the flag is picked up. There are eight tennis and six pickleball courts by the club house. Fripp Island is known for its white sand beaches protected by a natural barrier of sea grasses. There are five pools located throughout the island. Great fishing is available in the marshes and waterways. The house has parking available for a boat trailers in the side yard.
